I'm a new Harlan Coben fan. This is the third book I've read by him (I read The Stranger and Caught before). His books always have the best mysteries. I took off a star because of what I really disliked about the book: it had too much detail on Maya's thoughts. A lot of her thoughts were useless to the story it really didn't need it. And Eileen's (her friend) story line wasn't weaved into the story smoothly. I loved the big "bang" at the end (who the killer was) as well as the role played by Caroline. The ending was poetic. A lot of reviews didn't like the epilogue- it could've done without but it wasn't bad. I personally didn't like the protagonist, Maya. She was cold and distant from everyone; including her husband and daughter.
Ok, so this one wasn't half-bad. The plot was engaging and the pacing worked. I think Coben's problem is that his writing is just so...basic. I don't feel particularly challenged when I read one of his books, which is unfortunate because the stories he tells are perfectly set up for some good theme discussion. He's got potential, though. That's better than some other mass-market writers I've read.
The hype around this book is REAL! I went into it skeptical but that quickly changed. I didn’t expect any of what was coming or how the book unfolded. Easy 5 star rating.
It ended abruptly, but it was good. Definitely a twisty read.
So I read this book after watching the show. I still really enjoyed it!! The plot twists and everything! I honestly need to read Harlan Coben not because of a show
dark
mysterious
fast-paced
This was my first Harlan Coben novel, and overall I enjoyed it. The ending was definitely a shocker, and I didn't quite see it coming - however, with that being said, it was very much the "ending". The whole plot twist was revealed in just a few short pages, and it felt like and he finished the ending of the story so quickly afterwards that I had a bit of whiplash from it. With that in mind, I feel the book was unnecessarily long overall, and could have been trimmed down a little. It's hard to tell if Coben intended for Maya (the main character) to be morally gray or not, but either way, I didn't really find myself rooting for her all that much. For having a daughter, she didn't really seem all that connected to her. Seemed like Coben tried using her kid as more of a "prop" when it was convenient to give Maya a little more character depth, but just didn't really work for me. I am interested to watch the screen adaptation of this, and see how they portray the story!
I was eager to read this book because I want to watch the Netflix series.
The first half of the book was not really exciting per se. It was just introducing the reader to all the characters and their backstory and giving you depth. Then, the second half of the book was loaded with lots of action, and surprises!
