Good twists and turns. Now off to watch the mini series.

Maya is trying to adjust to being home from the war when her husband, Joe, is killed. In order to protect her two-year-old daughter, she agrees to have a nanny cam put in her living room. What she doesn’t expect to see on the video is her dead husband playing with her daughter. She confronts the nanny about the video, and she is suddenly swept into a conspiracy that seems to have no end. Can Maya believe what she sees with her own eyes? Is there anyone in her life she can trust to help her find answers?

Fool Me Once is a stand-alone thriller that will not disappoint those who have read other books by the author. Coben’s plot twists span many years and across several characters so that the reader may find themselves slowing down just to digest the newest nugget of information. As the book approaches the last few chapters the anticipation doesn’t relent and the reader’s chance to put the book down and complete their own life duties diminishes. Readers might want to make sure they don’t continue the last portion of the book until they know they have the time to finish it.

I loved this book 95% of the way through, but the ending kind of ruined it for me. Still an excellent read that I could not put down

More like 3.5 stars but here we go. Coben's electric thriller is a fast paced, twisty mystery that had me guessing to the very end. And that is why its not 4 stars as I think there were a couple twists too many. The book could have been pared down some and could have been even better. The story revolves around a strong female lead who's an ex-soldier who possibly losing her mind as death surrounds her and she can't trust what she's seeing. The story weaves old and new crimes together and there are quite a few red herrings. Maya, the main character is likeable and realistic and the ending is shocking. Overall, a page turner that I flew through but wished for a couple less twists.

Had to read before watching the show

This was fast paced and thrilling--until it wasn't. The main character, Maya was such an unlikable cliche (could she have mentioned any more how much she hates when those odious civilians make military references?). While I appreciated the author using a female character to explore PTSD and combat veterans, he failed at making her relatable or someone you could even care about. It was bizarre how disconnected she was from her daughter until about mid-way through when he tried to interject some sort of motherly instinct or feelings into the plot. The ending...omg. It was so horrible--completely bizarre and wildly implausible. Still, giving it three stars for being interesting.

Although I miss Myron Bolitar and Win very much, I very much enjoy Mr. Coben's stand alone books. This may be his best. Loved the characters, loved the story, and was somewhat surprised at the conclusion.

After being captivated by the Netflix TV series adaptation of "Fool Me Once," I was compelled to explore the original novel by Harlan Coben. My motivation stemmed from a sense that the series, while entertaining, might have glossed over nuances and complexities inherent in the source material. This assumption proved partially correct; the book indeed offers a deeper dive into the intricacies of the plot which the adaptation had trimmed or altered for dramatic effect.

Harlan Coben's "Fool Me Once" masterfully maintains a gripping sense of mystery that propels the narrative forward at an exhilarating pace. The storytelling is taut, with just the right amount of twists to keep the pages turning without resorting to the overly sensational additions found in the TV version. The book balances plot development with character depth, making for a reading experience that was both engaging and satisfying.

In conclusion, while the Netflix series introduced me to the story, the novel provided a more fulfilling and complex experience, resonating with a richness that the adaptation could only hint at. "Fool Me Once" is a testament to Coben's ability to craft suspense that is not only entertaining but also intellectually stimulating.
