I was actually pleasantly surprised by this book. It's kind of the old standby with its cheesy sentimental cover, and I expected it to be outdated and less than progressive. However, it's actually quite comprehensive and full of up to date information for a variety of birth scenarios and pregnancy situations. Definitely going to check out What to Expect in the First Year, assuming I actually find any time to read during the first year of my kid's life.

Although this books contains a lot of useful information, it is very much geared towards an American reader (thus some quite lengthy sections, such as choosing healthcare providers, etc. just aren't relevant if you're not giving birth in the US).

My other gripe would be that it's soooooo densely packed with information - it's not very well laid out, and as a result it's difficult to find specific information quickly (at least with the e-book version). I'm finding [b:Your Pregnancy Bible|838826|Your Pregnancy Bible|Anne Deans|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1178807695s/838826.jpg|824396] to be a much easier read, and is therefore much more informative for me (although this one is geared towards a UK reader, so if you're not British there might be parts which aren't so relevant to you).

Meh. It's fine but tried too hard to be "fun" and pushed too hard on alternative therapies and "breast is best" theory. (Fed is best, obviously!) Lots of dumb sidebars for "Dad" or "Husband" that clearly haven't been updated to account for literally any other kind of relationship. And just... repetitive, it's trying to be cutesy but it's still not a fun read! Mayo Clinic Pregnancy Guide is better written, has real pictures and not just illustrations, and references the actual science of pregnancy more. And if you want something more digestible than this 1000 page nightmare, just grab Expecting Better. She sums all the important stuff up anyway (even if I disagree with her opinion on alcohol).

This is of course the standard, I read it section by section as I moved along. Informational, but fairly dry. Maybe it was because I was reading on my Kindle, but I got annoyed sometimes, as it wasn't easy to find what were were looking for, as there is a big section right behind the dates of "other info" like for dates, high risk, etc. That is things I would have liked to see through out. Better books out there I think...

Very corny jokes throughout. This book is a pretty general overview of pregnancy. I would like to see actual photo/3D ultrasound footage of what baby looks like at different stages included (though there's always Google), because it's just not the same looking at drawings. I found the most useful sections to be the (detailed) labor and postpartum descriptions. On one hand... yikes. On the other hand, it's good to have an idea of what lies ahead.

Authoritative. Found the sporadic "For dads" sections to be amusing. Nothing can ever really prepare you for the real thing though.

This book validated all my pregnancy anxieties by showing me all my symptoms were normal and part of the journey. It was my pregnancy bible as I referred to it weekly, if not daily to go over what was happening to me day-by-day or week-by-week. Your body goes through so much during pregnancy and it was my first time being pregnant so I needed the reassurance. There are so many pregnancy books out there but you can’t beat a classic.

Alarmist and unfunny. You’re better off Googling.
