Enjoyed the storyline and the characters, but the time period is a little too far back for me.. not sure if I will continue this series.

I seriously thought about not finishing this but I fell prey to the sunk cost fallacy and I'm stubborn. This book doesn't know who it's main characters are. There are way too many narrators, Roberta, Griffin, Jemma, The Duke of V., the Duke of B., and a Miss who likes the Duke of B.
It is interesting that when Roberta decides to married a man she just met, it is the wrong decision, and when Griffin decides to marry a woman he just met it is the right decision. There is also quite a lot of the "oh no. no, I don't want that" man continues anyway, "okay I do want that."

I need to get more comfortable quitting books I don't like.

DID NOT FINISH: 36%

DNF 36%. Was not vibing and the main reviews kind of track what I was feeling.

Better than I thought it would be due entirely to some endearing characters. Too many POVs

This rating is based on the entire series because I wanted to see how Jemma and Elijah’s story evolved.

Much better than expected!
Historical romance with a good set of main characters and wonderful array of supporting characters. Main heroine is naive but likable and even though I am not chess aficionado I found the dialogues engaging. The explicitness of bedroom activities is toned down and just enough vague to let readers imagination choose how to interpret the plots and subplots. I'm glad I tried out this author.
I will be reading the whole series!

If my rating was only about the central romance, it probably would have been a 4 or higher; I liked the central romance. But there was so many more storylines and characters (justifiably, as it introduces the series, but perhaps not necessarily) that I was bored and the story felt like it dragged with unwarranted exposition about characters that eventually get their own books anyway. I liked the POV characters (Jemma, Villiers, etc.) in general and how their small sections contributed to more favourable and layered depictions of themselves as characters for the future, but felt like it distracted from the main story and made it a little less enjoyable and clear than it might have been.

What a weird book.

More akin to The Luxe or Gossip Girl, this features several points of view and storylines that aren't about our hero and heroine. The result isn't bad, necessarily, but it does mean that the main couple doesn't get nearly enough time to really connect with the reader. Which may have been the case anyway, because neither of these are very interesting.

What we get of Damon and Roberta's romance is very...shallow. He thinks she's very hot and pursues her relentlessly while she schemes to get with someone else. I don't think I really get why they're in love at all. The smut was okay, though a bit avoidant.

Rosalyn Landor did excellent narration, though.
