I HATED Roberta. HATED her. But I loved Gryffyn. He is the only reason this book got 2 stars. I won't even go into what all I hated about this book because it would just be a long rant.

I've never been a fan of Eloisa James but this book has made me a convert. Ha!
emotional funny hopeful slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I love a man who is down bad and would literally go on his knees for the woman that he loves.

Flat characters and unrealistic dialogue

Meh. I enjoyed the smut scenes, but I'm not a romance novel kinda lady. Not really the book for me.

I've read this entire series out of order, but with each one I read, I like the series more and more.

I think someone forgot to tell the characters they were in a romance novel.

3* (revised from 2*)

I read this some years ago and remember being highly unsatisfied. This didn't fall into the normal pattern of a romance. It was disconcerting and disappointing. After all what kind of romance was it that included cheating (in secondary characters), and an H I hadn't realised was the H until about a third through the book. Hard to get the mind to back pedal at that stage and switch H's. Even the love story seemed secondary to other plot lines. To top it off, the ending didn't wrap up all the loose ends.

Eloisa James was ahead of the times, and once I realised that this was part of a series, I decided not to read any further. Not until the series was further along. These days its usual if romance is not a Part this or that of many.

I recently reread this and my opinion of it has much improved. Maybe my tastes have matured or I knew I wouldn't get my romance fix in the usual manner. I also read most of it, as skimmed a lot of it last time, though I still skimmed some of the prose related to chess.

The sly humour, cleverly done, provided me with much amusement and kept me engaged. I can actually say I look forward to reading further into the series. Hence the revised rating.
