DID NOT FINISH: 45%

I really didn’t like the main character, I feel like she just kept making dumb choices. The writing was ok, but the story really dragged

2.5 stars

This book honestly read like a basic fan fiction - sorry! There are so many elements almost identical to other books like [b:From Blood and Ash|52831200|From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash, #1)|Jennifer L. Armentrout|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1585598504l/52831200._SX50_.jpg|78982151] or [b:What Lies Beyond the Veil|59339681|What Lies Beyond the Veil (Of Flesh & Bone, #1)|Harper L. Woods|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634090262l/59339681._SY75_.jpg|93494620] (from the Of Flesh and Bone series) in this story that it felt very predictable. It also seriously lacked in character development. We are given close to nothing on the FMC, just that she's been groomed all her life to marry the fae prince. What did she do with her life? Did she have friends? Did she have a relationship with her mother, who is mentioned in passing only?
I found it really hard to relate to Adara due to the lack of information in the exposure scene. We - the reader - are thrown into this world very much in medias res, with no background history (as much as we hate info dumping, there has to be SOME information, right?), and with a first chapter that reads just like so many other fantasy meet-cutes (girl wanders into the forest and is surprised by a stealthy hottie with a sultry voice), this first book was disappointing to say the least.
The spice and dirty talk are on point (thanks to our man Evren - you kiss your mother with that mouth? Damn), hence the 2 stars. And I gave an additional half star because I was still interested enough to pick up book 2 (note that I'm easily entertained).

As a final note, I am not a native speaker and do not usually comment much on grammar and such BUT - I was truly appalled by the misuse of irregular verbs?! "I have beared" being an example?? I am really open to learning about English exceptions and artistic license, so I actually googled that sentence to see if it could actually be used in certain circumstances - and I only got beard websites. This was not the only occurrence of a typo, word missing, or verb misconjugated in this book so I would suggest better editing (being currently halfway through book 2, I can also confirm that the editor of this book might be as much of a native speaker as I am, minus the English degree).
