Drink every time someone stiffens

this was good

I think I’d more accurately put this at about a 3.5. I enjoyed the book, the chemistry between them is completely sizzling, and it did mostly keep me on the edge of my seat. The plot is a little bit predictable but still, enjoyable.

This book drew me in from the first page!

As this is less than 300 pages I thought there wasn’t going to be much of a plot but I was so wrong. I was drawn into the story and the characters straight away and the romance was so addictive.

And that ending!!! I couldn’t wait for book 2!

He’s a 10 but you’re betrothed to his brother

Welcome to the Courts of Blood and Starlight and Shadows and Ash

This book is basically if Velaris’ shadows and starlight aesthetic had a love child with From Blood and Ash but make it extra forbidden. If that didn’t make sense, think of this as Poppy and Hawke indulging in a little stars and shadow play. I’m not saying this book is the same as either of the above, but those are definite comps, and tbh I loved that about it. And I was here for the forbidden aspect. Which was really the reason I picked this up in the first place. I mean you fall for your betrothed’s brother? Well please sign me up.

It starts off a little bit dramatic, think ‘00s YA hero/ine going ham, but it more or less finds its narrative rhythm quickly. The dialog and writing is patchy, flipping between awkward drama and punchy quotable lines. It’s also partly historical sounding and partly anachronistic, but I’ve been known to not care about those things in the past, I just noticed it here. This is a sort of fantasy lite version of FB&A, think a lot less words and world and a lot more steam, quick and page flippy and compulsively readable. Although I hope we’ll see more of the world in the next book. You can see that last twist coming from miles away, but, and I have to reiterate this, none of this detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I was in thrall, and I’m dying for the next book. And I do love a betrayal storyline. Sorry teensy spoiler but I judge you if you don’t predict it 5% in (JK I’m just a cynic).

The greatest strength of the book is the instant and explosive chemistry between the leads, made more so by the forbidden ness of their connection, and that makes up for most nit picks for me, including the insta lusty start to their story. Adara, unlike Poppy, makes a lot of idiot choices, which I’m prepared to forgive depending on what she does next; I liked the star markings aspect that made her special rather than being shunned for her markings (which wasn’t always great for her) and the yin and yang it made for with Evren’s shadows. But together they are straight fire; they can’t keep their hands off of each other and seeing them get dirty all over the continent is marvelously hot. Even when they’re absolutely audacious about how they behave in public around each other. I may sound hornee but their chemistry and steamy physical connection really elevates the book, and that connection is what makes even their careless behavior believable.
