I was expecting it to be more kinky based on the first paragraph and premise. It left me wanting for more of that. It's a nice light read but if like me you're interested in the kink part you may want to read elsewhere.

I enjoyed the writing style but couldn't really relate to the main character.

Edit: It's been a couple days and I'm going to increase my rating. I keep thinking about this book and the dynamics and you know what, I like the way it ended. Character hasn't made a 180° degree change in personality but I like Jenny so there's plus points for that. Maybe this book is ahead of its time.

DNF. Written by an adult but reads like the work of an edgy teenager with a love of metaphors

you know how some books just suck you in with an almost manic energy and you literally can’t put it down until you’re done? yeah, that was this one.

Previously never heard of Elle Nash before, but I'd most certainly seek out one of her one works based of the quality of her writing on display in this short novel. Animals Eat Each Other is a smorgasbord of self-destruction and human egotism with deeply flawed characters throughout its pages. This not a title for someone looking for a light, flyaway story. Animals is raw, unrelentingly bleak, and makes for an uncomfortable read.

While admittedly, not something I'd normally go for, and perhaps I would have appreciated the main character's journey of self-discovery more in my student years, I can't deny how well written it is.

With thanks to Netgalley and 404 Ink for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I learned that Lilith was made from the same dust as Adam, and not from his rib. I learned that Lilith was either banished or left the Garden because she refused to obey, and it seemed likely to me that was why Eve was punished the way that she was, as if any form that was not Adam was set up from the beginning to fail.
I wondered if knowing this would have changed the way I interacted with Matt and Frankie. When Frankie named me, I get wild and free to her, like perhaps she respected me or saw something exciting in me that I could not see in myself.

I was a pet though. It is important to remember that. What it means to be chosen first is different——to be under the arms of someone, close to the ribs. Right up next to the chest, but not in the heart. Lilith, a pet who isn’t from the body of man… I liked to imagine I was someone or something else, a hard Candy softening my edges against each curl of her tongue. I imagined myself disappearing granule by granule into the pores of her body.

July 2023. A fascinating short novel about a young woman who seeks self-worth through sexual encounters and becomes enmeshed in a polyamorous arrangement with a young couple who call her “Lilith.”

I picked this one up a few weeks ago when looking for short books with interesting names and covers at Sac Library, and I’m glad I did! Always a treat to find a toxic and self-destructive drama about complex and flawed queer individuals that isn’t one of those old “bury your gays” morality tales.

This is exactly what being a teenager and feeling suffocated by your home town feels like.

Every day I am thankful I am no longer 19 years old.
