Dark Horse is one of the reads that feels like a punch to your gut but in a good way. There’s a lot of emotions being felt. They range from sorrow to anger and it sort of just stays there. I felt for Roan. That sense of hopelessness she was feeling, transferred over to me and I wanted to jump into the book and save her. I wanted more for her. This may be a hard read for some readers. It has triggers and I say proceed with caution. Roan’s story a hauntingly beautiful. The characters were well written. Some I loved and some I wanted to choke. A twist and an ending I didn’t see coming. I was not disappointed.

This is an emotional and dark read. It deals with abusive and that is not something that’s easy to read about. The author did a wonderful job on the story telling. Her writing is brilliant and I look forward to reading more books by her. I give this 5 stars.

I listened to this on audiobook, and managed to finish in 24 hours. That’s really rare for me and is a testament to the fact I couldn’t put it down. On the flip side, there is some dark material here, which I realize is hinted at in the bio. But it was very difficult to hear the details of her story (and there are many disturbing details). Definitely could be triggering for survivors of sexual abuse and assault. The way Rowan was ensnared into her situation by the author and watching her untangle herself was gripping to follow. Which made it a good read.

Writing was good, topic hard. 3 and a half stars because it tied too neatly at the end, even though I wanted her to have justice. You can't survive that much abuse that long without help, can you?

Dark horses is an emotional and unflinching story about Roan, a teenage equestrian prodigy and her struggle to break free of the abusive relationship with her father. It is not an easy read and you need to go into this book with your eyes wide open.

The writing was fantastic and I flew through through this book. Roan was so likeable and unbelievably strong. There are some really difficult scenes that had me in tears but Roan’s journey, her discovery of her voice and strength to fight back made it worthwhile. There’s no getting away from the fact that this is not a happy book, it’s dark and upsetting but real and raw too. The author navigated such difficult topics with great skill and honesty. Truly a book that will stay with me.

Thank you to Welbeck Publishing for the gifted proof in exchange for an honest review.

I can't remember a time that a book made me physically ill and unsettled. Good book, but hard material.

I won this book in a Goodreads First Reads contest.

I did not finish. It was just not a story for me and made me not want to finish it.

Wow. Not a book for those triggered by rape. This book was so compelling, so well written that I couldn’t put it down. The characters were real and alive. The dark material was hard to read at times, but I cared so much for the main character that I easily pressed on to the end. Can’t say I loved the last paragraph, but I won’t hold it against the author haha.

It is dark and disturbing and should come with a trigger warning. I could not put it down and felt like a voyeur for devouring it. I didn’t think the ending sounded like the same person that the other 90% of the book portrayed. And I wanted more for her - more therapy, consequences, sharing, etc.

Dark Horses is the incredibly dark story of fifteen-year-old equestrian prodigy Roan Montgomery. She’s the daughter of an Olympian & a model, with a bright future ahead of her. Ever since she was four, her father has been sexually abusing her, and he controls every aspect of her life. Her mom is a drunk & aware of the abuse but never does anything to stop it. She’s able to endure it all until she meets Will Howard, a classmate from school, and falls in love for the first time. She soon finds herself at a crossroads...does she eliminate the distraction (Will) & follow the path that has been set for her? Or does she speak out and put an end to the abuse, even if it means losing everything she’s worked so hard for?

My heart broke into a million pieces reading this novel. There are many incredibly tough scenes of rape & emotional abuse, but I rooted for Roan & was extremely satisfied with how it all wraps up in the end. There are obviously quite a few trigger warnings that you may want to be aware of; the ones I can think of are incestuous rape, physical & emotional abuse, death of animals. If you can get past those, run out and grab yourself a copy because I guarantee this is going to nominated for awards this year, with Best Debut among them. Absolutely incredible
