It's frustrating to dump a book I thought I'd really like. Especially when I was liking it, for a while. There was enough humor and enjoyable characters in this that there's a chance I will pick it up again and give it a second try. But I think it was simply too long. At just under 50%, I couldn't believe I still had so much to go. I think mysteries especially are well-served by being slimmer. There was plenty I liked here, and I think if it was half or ever two-thirds as long, I would have really enjoyed it. But I'm not interested enough to feel anything but burdened at the thought of finishing it.

Thanks for whiplash. I didn't see that coming. De is by far my favorite character ever.

A great fantasy mystery. This book was an easy read and built up a world quickly yet effectively.

The end was maybe my least favorite part, but, I'll forgive that because the characters were interesting.

I would recommend this for folks that like Gideon the Ninth. The world is less complex, but the locked room mystery of it all, plus the irreverent yet lovable narrator give similar vibes. I would read more from this author.

There is nothing in these pages but love. I found myself lost in the story, the mystery, and the characters. I want to bring them home with me (well, most of them). Beautifully written and thoroughly enjoyable.
