The book is a well written personal opinion by the authors with some basis of truth. It is a thoughtful perspective that can make you think about the possible association of childhood trauma to all your problems. I could have done without the political stance he threw in, showing him as a Jew hating Jew...it made me regret supporting him in buying this book.

4.5 Very thought provoking. Really made me think about my own life and how I deal with daily living. It also made me think about my children and how I might have touched their lives both positively and negatively. It definitely is a book on 'growth' and how you deal with all the things that are thrown at you in life. Worth the long read!!

This is an astute book on the relationship between childhood trauma and illness including addiction. It is a very long book, but Dr. Mate is a very compassionate physician and wants to share his incites with those who need healing the most. As a foster parent, I can verify there are many children in this country that are lucky to survive their childhood and are in desperate need of mental health services designed for trauma survivers.

I typically find books like this to be slow and dense, but while this one was still a slower read due to the wealth of information, it remained entirely approachable. Given the subject matter—trauma, the impacts of society, gender, politics, childhood experiences, and more—there were moments when it felt overwhelming, leaving me concerned about making mistakes with my son. At the same time, it also validated some key aspects of my own life experience and its outcomes. Overall, it’s a highly informative, well-written, and important book.
