quite an odd wolfe text in my opinion, as i’ve been going through his oevre only recently. I can definitely see some of his favorite subjects and ideas being workshopped here, and in Jo Walton’s “mosaic” novel mode, it does something quite unlike many others i’ve read; much more uncertain of it’s own structure perhaps. a must read for fans of Joron’s O0

The treatment of colonialism and indigeneity in this book is kind of awful.

Gene Wolfe is an author with a very particular audience, I think. And I'm not it. The type of cerebral brain puzzle that this book was did not appeal to me, and I ended up being incredibly confused by it. Even when the point and connections of the book were explained to me, I still didn't see why I should care or what was so incredibly profound about it.
I appreciate Gene Wolfe's ability to present very complicated puzzles in his books, but that's not the type of reader that I am.

A book to be shoved under the upturned noses of those who think that sci-fi can't be Literature with a capital L. Even scraping the surface of these three stories will get your head spinning. Maybe if I start a chain of clones of myself one of them will eventually figure this thing out? brb
I came to this earlier work late, after reading most of Wolfe's multi-volume sagas, and I was not disappointed. This book -- three novellas, loosely coupled -- holds true to his trademark form of a strange and fully-formed world conveyed to us by narrators of varying levels of unreliability. Recommended, if you enjoy beautifully-written but somewhat non-linear storytelling.
