An absolutely beautiful book about a boy growing up among Orthodox Jews who has an unorthodox talent. This is one of my favorite books of all time. Highly recommended.

A wonderful book.

A beautifully crafted novel that follows an artistically talented young man, Asher Lev, as he defies the wishes of his Hasidic family and community to pursue his gift.

I wasn't sure about this book in the beginning, but it was fabulous! Bittersweet, and very honest about the tensions between being true to yourself and your community. Is Asher's gift from God or is it evil? Is it something he can control or does he deny his very self if he suppresses it and becomes who his father wants him to be? Ultimately, his mentor's words come true and his art costs him everything.

In the runnings already for favorite fiction book of 2008. Couldn't stop reading it and can't wait to read the sequel.

This is a beautiful story of an Orthodox Jew boy with an exceptional artistic talent and his struggle to find balance with these two defining parts of his life. What I love about this is how realistically Asher’s feelings are portrayed, especially in his younger years.

Good good good. I dont know how much I can get behind this concept of all-surpassing, all-important art that must blindly trample over everything and everyone in its way. But maybe that's because I have no concept of what it is to be an artist. I just didn't have any liking for the protagonist; while I felt his pain, I found him profoundly selfish. But the ending was majestic.
