Excellent. I wasn't expecting to be as affected by this book as I am, but since I put it down, I haven't stopped thinking about it. It explores identity and tradition and family and passion and beliefs and courage and fear so wonderfully.

every time i finish a chaim potok i'm left in awe. (and for some reason i always finish them in school, so the students around me definitely get a show out of my emotions and reactions after finishing, lol). this book was incredible.

also, i wonder if jandy nelson has ever read this and if it inspired her in parts of IGYTS- because jacob kahn was totally guillermo and they made statues out of the sand and the fact asher paints in his head... come on, jandy im onto you.

I loved this book so much. The decision to go with your talent and skills being true to yourself and the choice to remain true to your parents expectations and religious beliefs drives Asher Lev to greatness. A relatable book for young readers who feel they are different but still want desire to rise to greatness.

Do you understand Asher?
I see that you do not understand.

This one made me miss Wheaton, this story, that was more of a mythic journey than a story, with its way of stretching the canvas, making a point and another point. Tracing a line to connect the points. Adding form and color and texture and tension. Until suddenly I feel like crying.

Do you understand Lucy?

This book is one I felt better for having read. It remains on my shelf a decade after I first read it for a college English class.
