This is a pretty intense novel, dealing with subjects such as conflicting traditions, religion vs art, self-identity, and suffering. It has a slow pace but a lot of depth and emotion that really made me think. A lovely novel, if not complicated and a bit melancholy.
"Why does everything that lives have to die?" "So life would be precious, Asher. Something that is yours forever, is never precious."
What is My Name is Asher Lev about?
As another goodreads reviewer asks,
•A gifted child who can't not create art.
•A misfit to a misfit religious community.
•The attempt at understanding, love and generation gap between fathers, mothers and children.
•What is tradition and what is truth.
There are no words for the feelings this book gave me. Maybe that's what it's about. There is art. Highly recommended.

Flowed really well, it's obvious the author is gifted. While the book shows different perspectives about many deep topics, I didn't feel a wow factor.
Loved. The only part I felt lacking was the very end – i wanted more closure (but that's just a personal preference I have).
