A highly readable tale of a group of women in rural Kentucky, running a library in horseback in the 1930s, bringing books to their local community and finding family within themselves. I really liked this book - it’s about the importance of community and education, and not putting up with injustice or cruelty. It got a little melodramatic towards the end, but there was much to enjoy despite that.

I enjoyed this - but I think I’d give 4 stars if not for Julia Whelan’s excellent narration in the audiobook. Her change in diction, accent, etc. made listening a joy. Moyes created a few compelling characters in this story, with just a bit of predictability… but I loved the descriptions of countryside, the houses (I could smell Fred’s house!), etc. A good summer read!

This is like a 3.75 for me, but only because it took soooooo long to get to the point. It felt like the second half of the book was an entirely different novel! I loved the back half of the book, but you had to trudge through to get there. I loved the heroines of this book, they were "unique" without being annoying. It was incredibly frustrating to realize how different times were and how hard it was for woman to be independent and live their own lives, so it gave me a new appreciation for how far woman's rights have come.

Beautifully written. I could not put this book down. The best book I have read in a very long time.
