I have been fascinated by Alucard and his personality, and powers from the time I watched Hellsing Ultimate. Hence the manga and it doesn't disappoint.
Also the five stars for the art. It's just amazing.

There are some cool characters, Integra and Alucard, and a few good scenes, but overall it does meander and it lacks strong cohesion. The fight scenes aren't terribly engaging, but the dialogue sections are interesting as is the lore/background, which I'd like to get to more of.

It's been YEARS. Honestly, I cannot recommend this enough to fans of the series. The second I first saw that Dark Horse was releasing these gorgeous deluxe omnibus volumes, I knew I needed to start collecting them! I finally got around to reading this one and honestly, the ride is just as bloody and fun as it was going through the single volumes and the anime when I was a teenager! Highly recommended!

I wanted to enjoy this volume much more than I actually did. I have watched the anime and really enjoyed it. I have also previously read the regular volume 1, rather than this deluxe version, so I knew what to expect from the beginning.
I don't really like this art style. It does somehow work for the style of story that is being told though; feeling gritty and raw. But it meant that I read through this volume much faster than I expected because I wasn't stopping to admire the artwork.
Lots of the characters annoyed me, particularly Seras, which also decreased my engagement with the story. I do like Integra though and most of my favourite scenes involved her.
My husband really likes this series and I remember the anime getting better as it went on, so I am likely to read the next two deluxe volumes at some point as we already own them.
