Crichton slides back and forth between the novelist and the educator too often here, building up an adventure with characters too one dimensional, perhaps with the exception of a sign language fluent Gorilla. But it makes up for it with a trail of classic adventures set in the exotic land of Congo with cannibalistic natives, a lost city of diamonds and a malevolent force that threatens an expedition.

Not as good as Jurassic Park. Slow sections filled with too much techno speak! Too much padding. Plot is hard to follow. Not enjoyable!

The plot itself was pretty interesting once they started their journey. However, this one needed some serious trimming. It had a bunch of info dumps that were not necessary to understand or advance the story, especially during the first half.
