What a depressing, sad, confusing, strange book. It’s my kind of strange though. This book manages to capture the feeling of losing someone you love so well it hurts. This book hurts.

Also in case you were wondering about the dog,
yes, the dog dies. It’s thematically relevant, but he does die

This was an interesting read about guilt and grief. Even after a reread of the ending, I am not sure I completely get it. It was thought-provoking nonetheless.

Excellently written, deftly executed, well paced. One of the saddest books I've ever read. Huge huge fan of this and looking forward to more from Gus Moreno.

first off, I have to say I'm honestly stunned I didn't see more hype for this book coming out. I follow a lot of horror publishing news and I didn't know about this book until right after it was released. this is the best horror book I've read this year. this book scared me in a way I haven't been scared in a long time - this book made me understand the idea of sticking a horror novel in the freezer. the mix of body horror, building tension and dread, psychological horror, cosmic horror, and the overwhelming and devastating depiction of grief ripped through me as a reader. I will be pondering the last section of the book for a long time. absolutely phenomenal.

When dealing with stories centered around grief, the beginning is usually slow and miserable. I almost put this book down, but I'm really glad I hung in there until Part II, because when it gets good, it gets good. I was on the edge of my seat for the rest of the story.

The imagery and the language that the creatures use is a big high point of this story. Few horror novels actually spook me, but this one got my heart pumping in certain moments. I was creeped out and delightfully distressed throughout. Everything coming together felt like getting stitches removed: incredinly uncomfortable and uneasily cathartic. Really a great read.
