Odd Interlude: A Special Odd Thomas Adventure by Dean Koontz
I'm not sure what I think of this book, it is spooky, hypnotic, mesmerizing, surprising, creepy, funny and weird. The plot is simple: Odd, Annamaria and the dogs (Raphael & Boo the ghostdog) arrive in Harmony Corners, something extremely strange is going on, Odd gets to the bottom of it and saves the day.
The beauty of this short tale is in the writing. Koontz weaves the story like he's creating a tapestry of words. I read huge pieces of it aloud to anyone that would stand still and listen! Not much development of characters but that's fine, there is enough swashbuckling action and fantastical out of this world 'stuff' to keep Odd fans happy until the next novel hits the shelves. 3 stars

There is a reason why Dean Koontz has been on the number 1 bestsellers list at LEAST 14 times (even Google isn't sure how many times...). This man has found a formula, stuck to it, and must be highly organized in his notes to pump out concepts for the ODD THOMAS series.
I've been reading DK since I was about 15 (almost ten years now.), and Odd Thomas since I was 17. So I feel like I grew up and fell in love with the guy.
Anyway, nearing on that quarter life...I love how I can see the formula DK uses to write, and how he varies what evil, mysterious bad guy Odd faces. But...I also see some of the pit-holes in this framework (Odd is pulled somewhere-meets bad guy-bumbles his way to bad guy- fights- wins- leaves). Even though this was merely an "interlude", it was very much it's own work, but it missed some of the flushed technique Koontz is know for as well as how Oddie successfully comes out in the end.
This one was not one of the BEST...but it sure was GOOD.

Modest, quick talking, imperfect hero. Check.
Enigmatic/mysterious, quick talking female companion. Check.
Overly intelligent, quick talking, smart ass child. Check.
Perfect golden retriever. Check.
Megalomaniacal/narcissistic bad guy.
Religious overtones. Check.
Same story that he's been writing for thirty years. Slightly different title. I can't even remember whether I've read a certain book of his, because they've all globbed together from similarity. They've become forgettable and trite.
Yet I continue to read. At least they're pretty fast paced. With the exception of those scenes where the main character stops his narration in an action scene to explain the quantum mechanics of life or whatever.

The first part of this story enraptured me, I was mesmerized, terrified, enthralled, and whatever other synonyms for those words you can think of. But then part 2 took a sharp turn from the supernatural into a ridiculously far fetched sci-fi beyond the realm of my suspension of disbelief, and the only word that could describe how I felt was: Betrayed.
This was like if after watching 15 seasons of Supernatural, they ended it all with the reveal that all of Sam and Dean's adventures took place in the Matrix or some equally "wtf" plot twist we couldn't have prepared for. But what I like about that show is they have rules, like for the best example, all their explanations will be paranormal, based on the canon they have established. Odd Thomas has established itself to be a paranormal story. I started this series expecting ghosts, bodachs, psychic powers, fate... I did not sign up for and while the writing was still good, and I enjoyed it well enough, I can't deny I was immensely disappointed, and probably even more immensely disenchanted.

More along the lines of the earlier books. Fun, not having to focus on it too much.
I definitely enjoyed this more than Odd Hours. It felt far less rushed and not anti-climactic at all. It felt very well thought out, it was paved very well and reinforced some of the boundaries of Odd's abilities. As with the last couple of it's predecessors, the things that make Odd inherently odd, aren't present. No lingering dead, no bodachs. Just Boo. So I was a little disappointed about that. But it was a good continuation of some of the concepts of government unknowns from Odd Hours. Overall, a pleasant and quick read.
Completely fell flat. The ending felt like an afterthought. Odd Thomas should stay out of the science fiction realm. Reminded me of the second book, where there was so much build-up and then no thought put into the ending.
