Periods run deep, and they can be powerful signifiers of health, fertility and identity. But we have been so busy making sure no one talks about them at all, we have failed to see the other types of pain, beyond the physical, they can cause on a daily basis.Chatty and informal, this book is all about starting a conversation, and ridding society of the shame and silence around something that should feel so mundane and normal. I really enjoyed Barnett's why of presenting the various stories and issues she brought up. Recommended, whether you have periods or not. None of this should be revelatory, but that just shows how far we have to go.

Having heard some amazing reviews of this book I was looking forward to something funny any informative. Well I'll accept that it was informative and I did learn some things. The style of writing grated with me though and I also found that the author tended to lay it on rather thick (why say it once if you can say it three times or more). As for the laughter the book promised, I felt like the author was trying rather too hard to be funny and as such wasn't really succeeding and that's before mentioning all the period related puns, each with their "sorry, not sorry" type disclaimer to make sure you didn't miss it.
Two stars as I did learn some interesting things but I won't be recommending it.

Yes this is something that should be talked about more but I wished this book had more details about what happens when you are having your period and things that can happen during the month that are also related to periods
Really a very good book. Excellent combination of facts, studies, personal stories, history and a call to action. I enjoyed the no holds bar aspect and the way the author personally told her story with periods so openly.
I did dislike the surprising amount of “down there” use in the book. That actual phrase instead of uterus, period, etc. Not only in quotes but by the author. Having been born only 2 years before me, (early 30) this shyness was surprising.
So was the authors own lack of knowledge during her teens. I honestly thought the author was at least 10-15 years older than me, given how different our realities were when it came to knowledge about our periods, eg knowing where to put a tampon at 16.
But it does illustrate the openness of the book; and the grave differences in period education. Despite the author being close to her mother and having a period party, as did I. She still wasn’t aware that a tampon did not go in your anus. Not just her but also her 2 other friends!
The call to action is one of the best parts. So is SPOTTING all the puns!

Really enjoyed this one, Emma Barnett's personal openness, her candour and her fantastic enthusiasm towards knocking down barriers that have been crushing people with periods forever is extremely refreshing and engaging.
I enjoyed the structure as well, exploring aspects of life with a period from your first to your last and all the adventures in between by separating them from each other worked really well.
Thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a good laugh, great information and to better understand periods - whether you have one or not.
