I enjoyed it and I really love the world, Carrot, and the humour. However, I feel like my lack of historical knowledge meant I missed the meaning of some things. I also didn't much enjoy the masogeny but I will know to expect it going forward and also, haven't worked out if it's on purpose as part of the world or the actual thoughts of the author. I think if he hadn't dedicated the book to Neil Gaimen then I probably wouldn't be questioning this aspect as much.
I think I love the Rincewind books a little more than the watch, but this is still a delight.
This is the book the show The Watch is based on. I like both versions. I look forward to reading more about the City Watch.
Totally love Vimes.

One of his early Watch books in Discworld. It’s fun, fast, and plays on Noir and Fantasy tropes. Not as good as some later ones, but a lot of fun!
You know that thing where you reread a book that you know you enjoyed years ago, and are worried that it will be horrible now? Either because it’s filled with horrible sexist/racist themes that you didn’t really understand the first time you read it (looking at you, Xanth books), or because you’re a different reader now? It’s a relief to go back to this and find it to be cutting satire about policing and government that is somehow just as relevant today as it was originally. I wouldn’t call this my favorite Discworld book, but enjoyable regardless.
Two additional notes:
1. The audiobooks of this are in dire need of an update or remastering, which is disappointing but also reminds me that I might have listened to this the first time on CD on a long road trip.
2. I’m rereading parts of the series now because my 10 year old has fallen in love with Discworld and I’m refreshing my memory of the details so I can keep up. While the series isn’t necessarily appropriate for his age, it has led to some really great conversations and also, how awesome is it to watch someone discover books that you also love?
