I've read a lot of Terry Pratchett's books as a teen; I no longer remember which ones, but I remember loving them. So, I was really scared to revisit the Discworld; scared that it won't live to my expectations and that absurd humour lit is not in my taste any more.
Indeed, I'm much less into absurd humour, but I still loved it, however for different reasons:
- The surprisingly deep discussion about the societal problems: poverty, problems of the working class (housing, insufficient salaries, health), general ignorance, not caring about problems of people being far away from you (!!), and about mental health, and even nature conservation (I think Sir Terry would get along with Jason Hickel!). It was so much fun to find these nuggets of wisdom between the lines!
- The slow, thoughtful, intelligent prose - sometimes it is refreshing to read a story that is given at a slow pace, with a room for thought, banter, and philosophical thoughts. It does read slower, but it's an enjoyable feast.
- The wordplay! At times I felt like I did not know English well enough, but once I got a wordjoke I felt almost like a linguist ;)
An important sidenote: I find it so amazing that Terry Pratchett could write humorous fantasy without being sexist or offending any minorities. *Love it*. Other writers should learn from Sir Terry.
