8,5/10

The book is just what I expect from Pratchett. Here are a couple of my favorite excerpts:

First, in a in a footnote describing the one thing, besides things that threatened the city, that the Patrician could not tolerate:

And mime artists. It was a strange aversion, but there you are. Anyone in baggy trousers and a white face who tried to ply their art anywhere within Ankh’s crumbling walls would very quickly find themselves in a scorpion pit, on one wall of which was painted the advice: Learn The Words.

Second, where The Librarian, an orangutan because, well, Pratchett, has brought to the Watch’s attention that a book called The Summoning of Dragons has gone missing. He can't speak because I guess that would just be too weird, so he plays charades to get his message to Vimes:

"And you wouldn't happen to know what's in it?" Vimes sighed. "What? Oh. Four words," he said wearily. “First word. Sounds like. Bend. Bough? Sow, cow, how…How. Second word. Small word. The, a, to…To. Yes understood, but I meant in any kind of detail? No. I see.”

I'm going to go ahead and admit two things. First, I don't always follow what is happening in Pratchett's stories. His dialogue just loses me sometimes and I know I'm missing a joke from time to time. That's ok. Something I've kind of learned to sink into. (Makes me think I should reread The Color of Magic. But, really, why? There are so many of his books left to enjoy.)

Second, I really wish this book had chapters. It's just one continuous thing, with the occasional double space for a break. It might say something about me that I need actual chapters. I'm ok with that. If it had had chapters: four stars.

This book was everything. A fantastical tale of dragon hunting filled with humor, wit, friendship, political drama, and innocent love. Wizards summoning dragons and a ragtag group of unexpecting watchmen on the hunt for glory. This was my first Discworld novel and I’m hooked. Pratchett so eloquently weaves comedy into nearly every line of his fantasy. This felt like Monty Python in book form. Pure gold. Only reason it doesn’t get a 5 is because I wanted to read more about what Discworld actually looks like. The dialogue and perfect prose don’t leave much room for setting and worldbuilding.

Rarely is satire this smart; not only in it's bitingly funny commentary and cleverly conceived characters, but the plotting of the story is paced to perfection, and the themes and ideas are explored in depth without feeling like it draws you out of the experience. I can't wait to dive into more Discworld!

monty python fantasy novel

I've been trying to read the Discworld books in order, but I think I'll take up the recommendation to read them by group. I love the witches and the City Watch gang were fun as well.

I got this audiobook for my husband and we read it together on our honeymoon! How magical <3

This is my second Discworld book. I read Monstrous Regiment in January and my husband said he wanted to move to the Night Watch series within Discworld so we picked this for our honeymoon trip!

We laughed so much throughout this book, several times we had to rewind the track to re-listen to those funny moments.

Pick this up if you want a fun story with British humour about the most competent-incomptent members of the Night Watch. Also, a human whos destined for greatness but knows nothing about the human world. And a dragon, lots of dragons!
