It started really well and I was enjoying it until 3/4 through and then it lost its way

"Maeve Kerrigan is an ambitious detective constable, keen to make her mark on the murder task force. Her male colleagues believe Maeve's empathy makes her weak, but the more she learns about the latest victim, Rebecca Haworth, from her grieving friends and family, the more determined Maeve becomes to bring her murderer to justice." (From Amazon)

I really enjoyed this suspense novel with a dash of romance. Maeve is a great strong female character that has you rooting for her all through the novel. In the beginning I would have said her writing was like Val McDermid but now I would say it is more like Allison Brennan and Karin Slaughter.

I've learned to be wary of mystery novels that are marketed to be like Tana French's work.

It's difficult to approach such a novel, for me, because I'm inevitably drawn to them, French being one of my top beloved authors and you never know if this one might be one to get me through to her next book, and even if the novel is quite good, I am inevitably disappointed because no one is like French. Not even Bolton, who I also like a lot.

I'm not assigning any stars to this book because, unfortunately, I didn't finish it. I didn't dislike the book or the writing but it just didn't draw me back to wanting/needing to finish it.

I worry when a book like this is compared to a favorite/well received author because of possible responses like those that I have had. I think it only fair to let the author stand on her own merits, and not be judged from the beginning due to marketing.

I actually liked elements of this book, enough that I would like to try Casey again, possibly a more recent novel, possibly at a different time.

A solid first book in an incredible detective series. This book is a great start to the series but it's probably not as strong as some of the others. Don't let this put you off, this series will get its hooks into you and won't let go. I honestly can't recommend it enough. Jane Casey is an exceptional author and I will literally read anything she writes.
