This book was WAY too long, the story itself was intriguing but completely bogged down with unnecessary details that weighed heavily on the reader for no reason. Very disappointed as this was my first attempt at this authors work.

Overall a fairly decent murder mystery with a lead female detective. Some things seem a bit typical, and Maeve's "okayness" with sexist remarks from her colleagues is frustrating. But there's enough here to make me read at least one more in the series and see if it improves.

This book reads sort of like a slow episode of Law and Order. The crime and investigation was well written (although I will say that I thought the final explanation of events (not the actual resolution, but the manner in which everything was revealed) was totally not plausible).
The characters and backstories... I didn't get as much out of those. The romantic subplot seemed cliched and totally predictable, and either the majority of the characters were the same, or I just couldn't get enough of a sense of them to know.
I didn't realize while reading but I see now that this is the first book in a series, so perhaps everything was underdeveloped so as to give more fodder for future books... but I'm not sure I care enough about anyone in the story to want to read more. It wasn't bad, just not particularly compelling, either.

A new to me detective writer, one that was recommended by a library patron.  Maeve Kerrigan is a young detective constable, facing misogyny in the workplace and struggling to find her feet and prove herself.

A serial killer, the Burning Man, is hitting lone women walking home late at night in London.  Can Maeve and the team find him before he strikes again?

Told from dual viewpoints - Maeve's and the latest victim's best friend - this story feels long-winded at times.  I enjoyed the first two thirds or so then it got a bit wordy and dull, before picking up again at the end.  It also felt with the killer's suicide note that the author had got stuck on how to explain the killer's reasoning, and it jarred

I liked that Maeve is a flawed character, but the inevitable love interest felt misplaced.  I will read more, to give the author a second chance, but not an obvious winner for me

Some ass-hat broke into my car and my book was stolen. I had 2 chapters left. No idea who the killer is. :(
