Apparently this is Ms. Casey's third Maeve Kerrigan mystery, but the first to be published/promoted here in the US. It's a darker procedural, so cozy lovers stay away!

There's a serial killer in London, nicknamed "The Burning Man": he uses a stun gun on women, then viciously beats them and sets them on fire. We're up to the fourth woman killed, and victim number five appears. However, there are some discrepancies between this murder and the previous ones, and DC Kerrigan is asked to proceed as though this is a different case. There's a twist that I saw coming (I think that I've read too many of these *and* watched too many episodes of "Criminal Minds" and the various "Law & Orders", among other things), but otherwise this was a well-written mystery.

A new crime writer to me. I found the book instantly page turning and gripping with many twists and switchbacks! I had solved whodunnit very quickly but the whys and wherefores embroiled me in the plot.
Only reservation was the ending which was too pat and a technique rather outdated. I prefer the reader having to work a bit harder at the unravelling. That said, a gripping read.

I actually listened to this instead of reading it. I was interested enough to stick through to the end (I'm not nearly as tolerant of books I listen to as opposed to books I read), but I didn't think it was altogether difficult to figure out what happened. While there were a few surprises thrown in at the end, I think that the story could have built some suspense instead of having the entire thing just kind of wrapped up neatly.

Maeve Kerrigan, a DC in London, is smart, and an appealing character. She gets a lot of grief from her colleagues as a woman and Irish. This is the second in a series but I haven't read the first , and it didn't matter. The story is gripping to the very end, and Maeve's persistance (which some might stereotype as Irish stubborness) gets results.

A solid 3.5. I'm definitely interested enough to check out the next two from the library.
