Perilously close to five stars. This was really the Maeve I wanted Maeve to be in book 2, but I'm still glad I read them out of order. Maeve and Rob's friendship is fun and light and you get to see the rest of the squad being decent human beings if not necessarily policemen.
And that's where the missing half-star has gone.
It does beggar belief that any crimes get solved by this squad, and more so that Maeve is allowed to run around entirely by herself solving crimes. For like, days! Then she just calls in and is oh hey, lemmetellyouwhatIfound.
This is a pretty suspect set up (ha ha), but hey, if you're reading this and you're a major crimes detective and that's exactly how it is, holler at me in the comments.
I cannot WAIT to read the rest of the series.

I wouldn't say that I "loved" this book, but it was a decent plot and I didn't want to not finish it. At the end I did enjoy the book. This was my first First Reads giveaway book and I was glad to read it.
After loving #4, I decided to start from the beginning. It was a good story but it was slow and a bit dull. I thought the back and forth between perspectives was a cheap and easy plot device that gave away too much. That being said, I’m not giving up on Maeve and I’ll def read the next in the series.
An interesting combination of murder, police investigations, a little misogyny, and serial killers. I usually enjoy books that feature a woman as the chief investigator, and this one is no different.
fast-paced
The first Maeve Kerrigan book and it's good. I don't regret the lack of Josh Derwent because I have never quite understood his attraction. There's not a huge amount of suspense in the plot but it's an enjoyable read nonetheless.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
This was a good quick read, a basic police procedural, murder mystery. I liked most of it and really enjoyed the strong women featured at the beginning of the book. However, the typical old "love interest" had to rear its head for the young female detective, spoiling what was otherwise a fine portrayal of a smart, ambitious young woman.
I did not understand why the whole story needed to told at the end...confessions, backstory, etc. If pieces of this had been brought in earlier, it would have made sense, but there was no necessity to drag every bit out to explain what had happened.
Overall, if you like police procedurals and are looking for a quick read, it will work for you. If you want a well crafted mystery, keep looking.

The solution was glaringly obvious from the first few chapters, and the writing was clunky
Another book that contains graphic sexual violence against women without any sort of content warning. It's (writing wise) quite an easy read but I found the "twist" predictable and there was so much copaganda.
There's nothing massively wrong with it, as stories go it did make me want to keep reading. But it's getting 1.5 stars from me because it had all the things I personally hate in a story, particularly gratuitous rape. A book about burning women is violent enough but at least I was prepared for that going in.
