The first book in the Maeve Kerrigan series is told from two POV’s. That of Maeve Kerrigan, a young up and coming detective constable, and Louise North, a solicitor working at a financial firm who happens to be a friend of the latest victim, Rebecca.
The Burning starts off on a high note when a young woman fears she might be the next victim of the serial killer, “The Burning Man” and decides that she isn’t going down without a fight. Unfortunately for her and the residents of London she is mistaken, and the “The Burning Man” is still stalking the streets.
Maeve and her co-worker Rob Langton are investing the horrific murders of the five women who are supposed to be victims of “The Burning Man”. As they delve into the life of Rebecca (the fifth victim), they discover that everything doesn’t completely add up. And their investigation takes them someplace they hadn’t expected…
The Burning is a cleverly written crime mystery that is perfectly suited for a rainy weekend. Maeve is a solid strong character who is dealing with the stress of her job and her relationship with her live in boyfriend Ian. I enjoyed witnessing the banter between her and Rob. They have a good rapport and work well together. It wasn’t as much of a psychological thriller like I had first anticipated, but I did enjoy it and found the story to flow nicely.

Intriguing, thrilling and chock a block with twists, turns, tortoises and to-dos. this is an excellent start to a series I will no doubt be investigating further. The use of different narrative voices was splendidly done and really helped this become the sort of book one could lose track of time whilst being involved in reading
I really liked this book though I expected it to be more focused on forensics and psychology. The characters are fantastically described and have quite a bit of depth. I look forward to reading more in the series.

My very first Jane Casey book and I really enjoyed it. I love a detective story and this story was really enjoyable and had me engrossed. As The Burning is the 1st book in the Maeve Kerrigan series I’m going to continue with these books in order before moving on to her stand alone books.
I love that the books read like a TV series. Not only are we getting the ‘who done it’ story in each book, but we are introduced to the main detective in the book, DC Maeve Kerrigan, and we get to know Maeve well. I’m looking forward to reading about Maeve’s next case in book two.

Vandaag uitgelezen. Het was een leuk boek, maar ook wel een beetje irritant. Onder andere door het feit dat het er in het rechercheteam vooral om lijkt te gaan wie de beste rechercheur is en er behoorlijk wat sexisme bij komt kijken. Maeve, de hoofdpersoon, lijkt dat prima te vinden, tenzij het om haar eigen persoontje gaat. Dat kwam een beetje hypocriet over. Verder een oke boek.
Do tej książki idealnie pasuje stwierdzenie „nieważne jak zaczynasz, ważne jak kończysz”. Pierwsza 1/3 “Spalonych” ciągnęła się jak guma od majtek. Niewiele ponad 100 stron męczyłam kilka dni i nawet parokrotnie poważnie rozważałam możliwość ciśnięcia książki w kąt i definitywnego porzucenia czytania. Jednak w pewnym momencie nagle zaiskrzyło i sytuacja zmieniła się o 365 stopni - resztę powieści pochłonęłam na raz. Przez cały dzień byłam dosłownie przylepiona do książki - jakby mnie Kropelką ktoś przykleił. “Co kropelka sklei sklei, żadna siła nie rozklei!” - to o mnie i „Spalonych”!
Fabułę “Spalonych” poznajemy z dwóch perspektyw - policjantki prowadzącej śledztwo w sprawie seryjnego podpalacza oraz przyjaciółki jednej z ewentualnych ofiar miłośnika zapałek i kanistrów z benzyną. I naprawdę nie potrafię wskazać faworyta jeśli chodzi o historię - obydwie czytało mi się równie rewelacyjnie i obydwie były równie wciągające i intrygujące. Jak już pewnie zdążyliście się zorientować powieść Jane Casey to kryminał. I jest to kryminał z tych, które lubię najbardziej - czyli z bardzo bogatą i rozbudowaną warstwą obyczajową - nie brak tu rozległych opisów, a i postacie drugoplanowe są nadzwyczaj szczegółowo nakreślone. Jest to też kryminał pełen tajemnic, w którym prawie każdy z licznych bohaterów ma na swoim koncie jakieś niejasne i wstydliwe grzeszki i sekrety. Autorka bawi się z czytelnikiem, miesza mu w głowie umiejętnie myląc tropy i wprowadzając coraz to nowsze niejednoznaczne postaci i namnażając kolejne niejasne i zagadkowe tajemnice z przeszłości. Pomimo dosyć spokojnego tempa akcji to jednak powieść cały czas trzymała mnie w napięciu i niejednokrotnie zaskakiwała rozwiązaniami fabularnymi. Szalenie polubiłam i zżyłam się z główną bohaterką - detektywką Maeve Kerrigan. To postać silna, niezależna i inteligentna, jednak żadna z tych cech nie występuje u niej w zbyt pokaźnym nadmiarze, dzięki czemu Maeve wydaje się być taka normalna i sprawia wręcz wrażenie realnej. Po prostu jest to bohaterka z którą spora część kobiet mogłaby się utożsamiać i identyfikować.
