I’m going to say it again like I did for the first book…I’m all for the pure joy of the book, but the writing and, in this one more than the first, the pacing lets me down a little.
When you really think about this book, not a whole lot actually happens; however, a lot does happen because the characters in the beginning of the book are not the same characters by the end of the book. So this book is more talking, politics, and scheming than action as people are trying to figure out what Gianna is actually planning, navigating being a new king, or trying to get everyone on the same page.
We get more POVs in this book (or maybe I don’t remember as many POVs in the first like Josie’s) and I actually enjoyed Aiden in this book more, but maybe it’s because the love triangle is squashed so I can enjoy him as a character trying to navigate suddenly being king. Josie’s POV I enjoyed more than his, though. I found Josie an interesting character and I I enjoyed seeing the two of them navigate their trust issues as siblings and a king to solider.
Gianna was…well…a villain. Haha The end was a surprise. I knew we were going to get some crazy surprising, everything gets turned upside down twist, and…We certainly did!
Tova was very prominent in the book and I didn’t really like her, but she was also kind of a hurdle through it so that’s probably why.
Aya and Will, though, my power couple through this whole book. I carried on with my love of the two of them with no problems from book 1. This book is a little spicy compared to book 1, but it’s not the focus. Nor is their relationship the focus, but their relationship is partially a guiding point for the two of them in this book.
After that ending we got…Definitely looking forward to the next book!

I want to love this series but too many situations are contrived to make the plot move along and it just takes me out of it.
slow-paced
This book was faaaaaaar too long, I almost dnf'd after 300 pages of absolutely nothing and ended up just skim reading the rest.

This book was insane! It's filled with political intrigue, secrets, deception, betrayal, friendship, and romance. The story continues immediately after "The Curse of Saints." Aya and Will are now back in their kingdom. However, their duty has changed. As they try to learn more about the history of the saint and uncover what their queen is plotting, friendships and loyalty are tested, as well as the trust between Will and Aya. At the same time, Aidon has become King of Trahir and is trying to keep peace between the humans and Visyas. Not only does he face a lot of political challenges, but also have to deal with his affinity that can no longer be suppressed. The story contains so many subplots and moving parts. Although the pacing can be slow at times, it does pick up, and the buildup and the connections are so worth it. As for the characters, they are definitely more complex. Each of them faces their own struggles and fears. I love that we got to know them on a deeper level. It also plays an interesting dynamic when it comes to relationships. There is definitely a lot more angst and tension, but I love watching these characters work through these issues together, and if it leads to some steamy scenes, it was just an added bonus for me :).
I honestly cannot wait for the third and final installment, especially considering how the book ended. I feel it is going to be epic.

3.5. This finally picked up for me once Tova got on side, then undid most of that goodwill it engendered by killing her. *curtsies*
