This book took awhile to get into but once I accepted it more as a novel with dual protagonists and less of a collection of short stories I enjoyed it. It’s not scary by any adult standards but the characters are plucky and the situations they face are horrifying at times. Be ready for lots of fox puns and fox word play. It can get annoying. Fun spooky if not scary read for the Halloween season.

Honestly, it took a lot for me to get through this book. I really was not a fan and I'm not entirely sure what the high ratings on here are about. Sure, kids that love horror books are going to enjoy this one. However there are some really horrible things that happen in this story. The only thing that saved this from being a 1-star rating was the ending. I really didn't think it would end that way.

DNF-ed 53%. Sorry, the first story was amazing, the second meh, the third OK-ish, the fourth eh. I didn't like Uly and I was sad that he turned out to be one of the MCs. He just kept whining, complaining, and thinking everyone was being mean to him or cruel. I understand that he had a tough childhood, but he should really open up more and stop being down about everything. Also, come on, you just have to try. Oh boohohoo my paws are stuck, I don't want to go on. Boohohohoohoho. Urghh... Mia wasn't always a fav but she was pretty sweet and I started liking her more and more.
I was looking forward to several short stories about young foxes. Not one continuous story about 2 foxes and the things they experienced with the other foxes and how they felt about the story in between. A shame. It started off quite promising.

I just loved this little book! While picking my son up from his elementary schools after-school Library Club, I noticed this book on the 'New Releases' shelf. I picked it up, read the blurb, and bought it on my Kindle that night.
This is a creepy story, but not super dark or terrifying. It's just the right amount of scary for elementary aged children.
What I loved most about this book is how timeless it felt. I don't know how to classify it...it's not as dark as a Grimm Fairy Tale, and it's not as sweet and sugary as a Traditional Fairy Tale...it's somewhere right in the middle.
No location is given, nor is there a year, so these little foxes could exist anywhere in the world at any time, and that's what I loved. Even though this is a new book, it easily felt like the story could have been written 150 years ago.
So glad I saw this and picked it up on a whim. I definitely recommend this for elementary/middle grade readers. Great story!
