I'm glad the word "scary" is right in the title. "Scary" is not being used in a cute or ironic way here. This is not the kind of story where everyone is okay in the end. There's real danger and cruelty and death. But the story does have a bittersweet happy ending. All children's books should be as honest and hopeful as this one.
I love foxes, and this was super cute. Some of the foxes describing human things parts were a bit confusing, but otherwise thoroughly lovely.

A very good book that I'd recommend not just to the age demographic it's aimed towards (middle-grade, I believe), but to anyone who enjoys a good scary story with a little more meat to it.
The author is very skilled at writing in the viewpoint of these two young foxes and also does an incredible job describing the world through their eyes. How things like streets or human houses are spoken about in the book truly immerse the reader further into the story. I can't remember ever getting bored with this book; I hope that, if you choose to read it, you'll feel the same.

Graphic: Animal death, Violence, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Bullying, Emotional abuse
Although I did expect the ending, I still enjoyed it because of the sUsPeNce. I was really excited throughout the entire story, I loved the characters and their delimas, however strange they may be.
Imagine that you are a tiny kit, no no, hear me out- you are a tiny kit. On a eerily quite and foggy night, your set out with your siblings to visit an ancient fox to hear a scary story. The forest is quite around you and you huddle around the other kits as the story begins.
Scary Stories for Young Foxes was less scary and more adventurous. Mia and Uly's stories is so wholesome and as you can possibly imagine I will kill anyone who even think about hurting a single hair on Uly's body, respectfully of course.
I do not appreciate the Beatrix Potter slander tho

This book surprised me multiple times, I really enjoyed it, as did my kids. It is legitimately scary too, but our kids active imaginations did fine. There's lots of suspense, some loss, spookiness, and frights, but never crosses the line into horror... or doesn't dwell on stuff long enough to make them horrifying. It made me nervous going in not knowing what to expect, but I'm so glad we read it. I don't really want to say more so as not to spoil it. It's really worthwhile, I may come back to it again someday.
This MG book is a bluebonnet choice for the 2021 list so I had to check it out. Honestly, I read this book last year in 2019 but wanted to reread it again now that I saw it made the list.
A marvelously spooky book suitable for younger(ish, mileage will vary as always) readers yet gripping enough to hold older readers. It's intensely atmospheric with a magical flavor to it without getting explicitly fantastical. This is a supreme dark night story book (it's not actually short stories, but the framing device splits things up nicely for short reading sprints if that's your jam) lots of creeping horrors (including a startlingly horrifying Beatrice Potter cameo), tons of adventure, & some heartwarming moments. There's also a lot of good stuff about sacrifice and family and survival in here that seeps through without being preachy. It's good stuff.
Very recommended for any fans of Over the Garden Wall (it's got a similar 'strange & dangerous fall/woods' vibe to me), animal stories, &/or the realistic spoops.

Honestly loved this book even as an adult reading it casually. I loved the main characters and thought the story structure was very clever.
