Creative worldbuilding and solid plot once it gets rolling (which took a while, but it was worth hanging on!). The action scenes were exciting.  Gideon is likeable enough, but I really, really enjoyed the character that turned out to be the antagonist the most.

Critique:
Personally, I wasn't too fond of the narrator voice, too snarky for my taste and keeping track of all the characters and titles might have been easier if their given names were used more frequently to describe them.
As for the mystery, the stakes weren't too clear (how final is death in a necromancy setting? What was everyone's goals exactly?) so as a reader you were left guessing about a lot more than just the whodunit. I'm guessing navigating the pages will be easier in the sequel, now that the groundwork of the setting has been established.

I'm not sure yet what to make of the other main character, Harrow, but I'm sure I'll find out in the next book.

Me, reading act 1 through 3: oh dang what a great book! Snarky himbo lesbian narrator, vibrant side characters, amazing dense worldbuilding, some murder mysteries, skeletons galore, this is so enjoyable, I see why this gets recommended so much! :)

Me reading acts 4 and 5: I am in pieces on the floor. I am a broken husk of a person.
This gave me the beautiful Enemies to Power Couple I was so desperately craving, and then immediately yanked out of my small gay hands. The pool scene put the dagger in my heart, and the final fighting scenes pushed it through. I have not loved a protagonist as much as I loved Gideon, and a relationship as much as Gideon & Harrow, in a long time, and now she's DEAD?? Fuck this.
 10 out of 5 stars.

The author failed to capture my attention when she didn’t introduce the main problem until 30% or a bit over 5 hours into this book. Until then, Gideon is just messing around trying not to put herself as a phony while her necromancer is off doing secret stuff. I listened with mild disinterest for a while, but more and more that has shifted into active dislike so it’s time to throw in the towel. I feel like the world building has been weak, and what’s up with Gideon being an indentured servant of some sort who is treated like a slave, has never seen a salad in her life, regularly loses her possessions to the girl/teen/woman who enslaved her, but reads comics often enough to compare real life situations to comic scenes??
