me, wearily looking at tumblr, knowing that a recommendation from there would come bite me in the ass with how much i loved it years later.

LOOK!!! I FUCKING LOVED THIS!!! And I don't think there are words to say exactly how much!! I love Gideon the reluctant anything in this book. My girl does not want to do anything!! Just look at hot women and swing her sword and eat cake!! And that's so relatable!!! She's also so hilarious, like tell me why am I having so much fun in a book that routinely includes bones, and death and diseases in its narration. The answer is: Gideon.

Also, Tamsyn Muir is just a genius in balancing that humour with intelligence and a good plot, and at the end of the day, what more can i ask for when it comes to my new favourite series? I'm a simple woman, give me correctly researched mythological names, correctly researched and used Latin, and consistent swearing littered throughout, and I will be on my knees!

Everything I want a book to be: hot, bloody, ornate, surprising, and killer from the moment you step into it. I savored starting this because I knew it was going to be good and, guess what, it was GREAT. Started on Tirtiri Matangi, inside a lush grove filled with at least a hundred hungry birds that popped in and out and in and out of my sightline, never leaving the roar they were creating around me with their collective pips, squawks, and signs of life. Surrounded by such Kiwi joy and life, I knew I had to start a book by a Kiwi author with so many sex jokes and necromancy. It was a good decision.

Sapphic main character who is a little bit of an asshole? That's literally everything I've been wanting.

This book was a romp, and ticked off all the things I could want in a novel: lesbians, spoopy aesthetic, a genius mash up of gothic, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery genres, action scenes but also a lot of nerds talking about magic/science, and some straight-up-my-alley irreverent deadpan humor. Imagine reading Nancy Drew, but there are a lot more swords, everyone is seriously dedicated to spooky makeup and has magical skeleton powers, everyone has the hots for each other, and most of the characters are dead or will be soon. Nearly every character had a great hidden secret, and I couldn't help imagining each reveal as a Scooby Doo monster de-masking. There were definitely some plot holes (some of which could be addressed in book 2), and the sheer number of characters and unexplained magic rules got pretty confusing, but this was so unique and fun I set those flaws aside.
