Still tossing with rating. This is my favourite book of the series so far, I may bump it up to a 5 star later
I do quite love this series. I love reading about Claire and Jamie's undying love, and now we get Brianna and Roger, too! in America! Score! Like all the books in the series, its long. Too long. I have to take breaks and read other books and I need a break before I start the next in the series. However, the history part is so well researched and never boring. The characters are so real to me. And I want as much read as possible before the new TV series starts. ;)

I’m pretty sure the author is just writing whatever comes to mind at this point. There is no clear structure, no interesting turns... just “oh, and she got pregnant,” and “oh, Ian’s a Mohawk now because I’m tired of writing his character,” and “oh, that gravestone I mentioned before was fake so whatever jk.” Also, hey: there are plot devices beyond rape. This entire series is propelled almost singularly by rape and sexual violence.
I’m going to keep reading these, because I bought them... but wow they are not good anymore. Not even romantic. Just crap.

I almost gave this 3 stars, but the last quarter of the book saved it for me. The characters didn't seem as well rounded & in depth as usual until near the end. I finally felt like I knew Brianna & Roger when she's had the baby and he comes back from the Indians. Loved how Jamie & Bree met, and their tumultuous relationship--talk about misunderstandings!
better than the third one! i liked that this one picked up the pace. tho i would have liked a different plot line of brianna not getting pregnant. boring
2021 re-read: WHY did Roger become such an ANGRY, sexist man, the moment he went back in time? Bleurgh.
Also entertaining to notice some of the minor continuity errors - I realised part way through this read that in Voyager, Brianna is given a birthmark behind her ear. That's used as a way to prove Jemmy belongs to Roger in a later book, as he has one... Whoops.
Re-read again.
I'm somewhat falling out of love with this series the more I read it, and with the fact I can't picture the characters except as the TV series ones...

'Drums of Autumn' is extremely satisfying as it continues the thrilling adventures of the English 20th Century time-traveler Claire Randall Fraser and the 18th Century's sexiest man, alive and dead, Scotland's Jamie Fraser. However, the novel is #4 in the Outlander [bc:Outlander|10964|Outlander (Outlander #1)|Diana Gabaldon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1402600310s/10964.jpg|2489796] series, and it is not by any stretch of reality a standalone.
As usual, the Frasers are living a life of dashing daring-do and swashbuckling action, or maybe I should say more accurately, they are constantly surviving deadly dangers that span continents with kilt-swishing panache, one hand on a pistol and the other carrying a book of poetry.
Always finding themselves in the middle of interesting life-threatening adventures are normal for Jamie and Claire, but now their brash and beautiful 20-year-old American daughter, Brianna Randall, and her Scottish boyfriend Roger Wentworth, both of whom are alive and well in 1971, are thinking of throwing themselves into the Fraser family business of dangerous time-traveling lifestyles.
Claire and Jamie have decided to settle for awhile in 1768 North Carolina while their new scars from adventures in the last book heal. The dynamic duo have purposely left Brianna to live out her life safe in 1971 with Roger, both of them unscarred so far and enjoying modern conveniences. After all, there be pirates and dangerous Indians and wild bears in the America of 1768, while 1971 has hot water, antibiotics and electricity. Plus, while Claire can step through the strange stone portals and travel 200 years back and forth in time, she has learned very little about why.
However, Brianna, confident and unsullied daughter of Claire and Jamie, has plans. She misses her mom. She keeps wondering if the portal will open for her, too. Maybe it is possible she inherited the ability of time travel!
Never underestimate the ties between a daughter and her mother!
