If I were reviewing the first 400-500 pages of this novel, I would sadly need to give it a 3, but thankfully the second half redeemed much of what I felt the first half lacked. Overall, however, I enjoyed this fourth installment in Gabaldon’s Outlander series significantly less than the previous three. While I enjoyed (most) of the new characters that were introduced, I was not too thrilled with the seeming changes in characterization of both Jamie and Claire at various points, again primarily in the novels’ first half. However, my biggest problem was the lack of focus, as the novel could have lost those first 500 pages and been equally as entertaining (I can only watch people wander around and get “lost” so many times without reason or cause…). Am I giving up on the series after this? Absolutely not, but I will go into the rest of the series with different expectations in narrative and characterization.

3.5 - not quite as good as the previous 3, but still a great read! Onto the next!

Even though I spoiled myself accidentally on some plot points I really wanted to see how it played out. the beginning was painfully slow though.

Still loving this series! This one slowed down a bit in the middle but picked up enough steam by the end that I immediately had to pick up the next book.

As great a Voyager was, I was hoping this would a great follow up. While this book has great moments such as everything with Jaime&Claire, plus the fact that they go to colonial America; it was plenty of weak moments. Mostly from Roger and Brianna... They take up at least half of the story and they are just not interesting to me. Here's hoping that Fiery Cross is better.

So good it hurts. A marvelous installment. Slow to start but then explosive in adventure.

And Diana Gabaldon delivers once again!

One of my favorites in the series!
