As I have waited until the end of book 5 to add my reviews to Goodreads, I’ve somewhat lost track of what has happened in each book. I just want to keep reading. And not just because of all the sex; there’s a lot if that, which you already know if you’ve gotten this far in the series. Still, each book introduces just enough new characters to make it interesting, without losing the plot on Jamie and Claire. Really enjoying this!
The adventures continue for the Outlander characters in book four. While it was still a page turner with lots of adventure, I found myself irritated with the characters far more often than in past books. I realize that we're not meant to love protagonists 24/7, but I got so annoyed with the characters at times, that I had to walk away for a few days. Still, it was a fun read. But definitely need a break from the story for a bit.
love. jamie stays superior. john stays my favorite. and book roger deserves some applause
So far this has been my least favorite Outlander book, only because of Brianna. She caused 80% of the fluff in this book by not communicating with anyone. For those that have watched the series, this book really drags it out and made hard to read at times. I did have to listen to a majority of this book because I found myself wandering away from the book. I could have done with more Jamie and Claire and less Brianna.
They just get better and better! Slow at some parts but great overall. On to the next!
This book did quite a bit of dragging for me. But, overall, I loved it just as fiercely as the others.
I first read this book over 20 years ago, immediately after finishing the first three, and remember feeling it was the perfect conclusion to a near perfect series.
Four, almost five more books later in the series (at the time of writing this review), I now know "Drums of Autumn" wasn't the last time the readers would get to spend with these beloved characters.
This time around I found I was still vastly entertained and in complete awe of Gabaldon's storytelling prowess. However, character development is very important to me and it felt like Brianna almost become an unrecognizable character from the previous book. I get that one would change quite drastically in such circumstances as took place in book #4, but I couldn't completely connect with her like I wanted to.
And towards the end, it sometimes felt the book was turning into a bit of fan-fiction which is always a concern for me when reading series fiction. Still, despite these criticisms, this was quite the reading adventure!

Pretty darn good continuation to the series. Tons of new and horrible fiascos were incorporated which I never could have thought of on my own. Although I have to say that Brianna getting pregnant kind of put a damper on her story for me.
