Drums of Autumn

Diana Gabaldon

4.15 AVERAGE

Gabaldon is a fantastic writer, but a terrible editor. Much of the plot of this book doesn’t happen until the 50% mark which I guess is fine if you’re already well versed with the characters.

I’ll probably continue the series, but I’m starting to lose interest.

Slow to start, but great finish

I feel like this was sort of a transition book for Gabaldon. I hope there is less family drama and more history in the next one, the romance was definitely too much for me in here, or at least not well balanced with the historical bits.

I'm glad I'm listening to these books rather then reading them, as they are so long. Plus, they make work commutes bearable. This book is huge on misunderstanding - I seethed for one whole CD while 4 adults insisted on not talking about something. Other than that one point of contention, I liked the book, but I'm getting tired of the series. I feel like I have to finish the series, but part of me wishes it would end. Another part of me is thrilled to keep listening. At least the writing is lovely.

I have such mixed feelings on this book. It was good but also felt like a hold over of sorts - that this book (and book 3) was there just to get certain characters into certain places and times... And it's long - very long, and sometimes chapters feel like they are too long, unnecessarily.... But also important things happen in this book, that become MUCH more important later in the series.
CAWPILE(A) ratings:
Characters: 5/5 - LOVED the character development that we got in this book. So much development.
Atmosphere/Setting: 5/5 - Yes so much here! I thought that the atmosphere and setting were both better in book 4 than in book 3.
Writing Style: 4/5 - I love Gabaldon's writing, but sometimes it's too much. There was so much time that was spent on certain parts of the stories that - in my opinion - didn't necessarily need as much time. It would still have carried the same impact if it wasn't for several chapters (where the show, I think, did it better - cutting out some of that...). Just in my opinion, of course.
Plot: 4.5/5 - I loved where the plot went in this book, it was mostly linear and organic but at times we trailed too far away or took too long to get there.
Intrigue: 5/5 - I am always intrgiued, even on my 3rd reread.
Logic/Relationships:  5/5 - It hurt how much it all made logical sense. I loved seeing the different relationships develop.
Enjoyment: 4/5 - I Enjoyed it all, but again, was just a bit too much for me.
Audiobook: 4.5/5 - I LOVE Davina Porter, she always does a great job narrating these books. BUT, at times - especially in the beginning of this book, her voice for Brianna and Claire were so similar that when I was just listening to the audio and not following along with the paperback, they sounded the same character and it got confusing.
Total: 37/8  = 4.6
