DID NOT FINISH

I rarely, if ever, do this, but I'm permanently shelving this series knowing the TV show will beyond deliver.

Spoilers ahead:

The first 17 chapters (at least) of DoA are completely aimless, and I felt very alienated from Claire and Jamie. I looked up some spoilers and learned that Gabaldon will be playing on an old favorite, plot-device-rape, which one can only read so many times. I also learned that the series will continue in America; I've read plenty of Revolutionary War fiction and am really quite uninterested in reading about how it will effect J/C over the course of five novels.

I loved Outlander, I adored Dragonfly in Amber, and the STARZ show is amazing. And that's enough for me.

Such a topsy-turvy, wild ride of a book. There is humor, love, romance, harsh realities, uncomfortable moments, short stretches of boring detail, action, surprises, sadness, happiness, and more. This list could go on and on. No wonder, with such a hefty novel. It ends rather well, I'm happy to say, and I do look forward to continuing with this epic series.

I still stand by my word that everyone should read this series. This installment wasn't the best, but it still got fantastic about halfway through, and I read the last 600 pages or so in two days because I couldn't put it down. It had a slower start than the previous books, but once it got going, it made me love every character more than ever before.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

It's kind of pathetic just how much I fell in love with Lord John Grey in this book, too, considering what's known about him. I wonder if Gabaldon intended readers to do that? Either way, I've fallen for him. I've also grown to like Brianna even more than I ever liked Claire, which is weird because I really didn't care for Bree at all at first. Now, I'm totally swept up into her story. I'm in too deep, basically.

Best book of the series so far in my opinion.
