This just blew me away. Incredibly sad and beautifully written. Perhaps it feels like a pretentious thing to say but it also felt really important- placing that Dickensian morality tale of how systems prevent people in poverty from escaping its cycle into a modern context where it fits so well. I had to stop reading for a couple of days in the middle because it is very dark but I loved it overall

Such a whirlwind book about disinvested, but highly lively / resilient / plentiful Appalachia. Demon’s story is one that is all too common yet still such a hard pill to swallow (even when you know that realities such as his are common… they are so often willfully ignored). I really enjoyed being so sucked into demon’s world and experiences. It’s kind of an “epic,” and makes me want to read David copperfield.

This is a first person narrative, initially through a child, and later young adult's perspective, as he recounts his early life of extreme poverty, child abuse and drug addiction. A modern spin on David Copperfield, it gives us a frank commentary on how the system fails people. The subject matter is serious, but Demon himself actually sometimes has a fairly humorous take on the events of his life which makes this a fairly enjoyable read.
What I really appreciated is while the events that occur in Demon's life are often tragic, the book does not gratuitously describe them but provides them as a very matter of fact, candid account. This lends to Demon's character as a resilient character, reflecting on his life. All the characters are presented as flawed people, trying to survive dire situations.
