This book is life-changing, genuinely. It captured my soul and explored it in a whole new way. There are some parts that I didn't love, but honestly, they are small and could never dilute the many many things in this book that I know will stick with me forever.

Reading this book was like watching a friend get beat up in slow motion. But somehow, you are still rooting for them — the underdog in the fight.

I often felt like I was in a completely different time period - Kingsolver does a great job of depicting life in Appalachia as massively behind the times making you think it truly is a different time…..and then throwing a "dose" of the modern world in to remind you that you are not stuck in the 1960's and that this is indeed what life can be like in Modern times.

A bit of a slow read at times but I loved that it all ties up neatly in the end. Would have loved a little bit more of a look into the future but was grateful for the glimpse.

I'd heard recommendations of this before reading it, and loved Animal Dreams by kingsolver when I read it earlier in the year. 

This just blew me away. Incredibly sad and beautifully written. Perhaps it feels like a pretentious thing to say but it also felt really important- placing that Dickensian morality tale of how systems prevent people in poverty from escaping its cycle into a modern context where it fits so well. I had to stop reading for a couple of days in the middle because it is very dark but I loved it overall

Such an amazing book. The characters are all so complex and real. The author has so many things to say, and it's done in such a brutal way. No criticisms.

such a well written book with so many layers to it in focusing in the opioid crisis in the Appalachia. damon not only has a tragic life but he also is able to overcome at times. the ending made me happy because damon deserved to overcome addiction plus be around good people. he is more than his circumstances. this will forever be a book i think about due to how real the book felt at times and the level of love some people had for each other.
