There are a lot of twists in this book, and I really don't want to spoil them, so apologies if this is necessarily vague. Kat has no memories earlier than three years ago, when her family went into hiding. They are living off the grid, moving from place to place, changing their names each time. Kat is frustrated with a lack of knowledge and presses them for answers. When her father leaves for a couple of days, her mother is captured. Kat narrowly avoids capture herself, and with the help of her new friend Parker sets out for the safe house she was told to go to in case of trouble. But nothing is what it seems and Kat and Parker become more and more embroiled in the twists and turns of what is safe and who to trust. Fast moving and hard to put down! Recommended for grades 5 & up.

A fun, twisty middle-grade thriller with a dash of science fiction. Katrina (current alias, original name unknown) has been in the witness protection program with her parents for as long as she can remember, though she knows no details about their past or why they're in hiding. When their current location accidentally leaks and mysterious bad guys come after them, Katrina has to set out with her new friend Parker to try to save her parents and finally learn the truth of who she is. Katrina is a great main character, and this was a thoroughly enjoyable, fast-paced novel about identity and family.

2022 reading goal: read a book just for the cover.

I think the concept of this book could have been interesting but there is just WAY TOO MUCH DAMN TALKING. Show me what's happening instead of telling me. There's no tension, there's no depth. Missed opportunity.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, will definitely recommend to my middle school students. If you enjoy Charlie Thorne you will love this.

This was a fantastic middle grade audiobook, fast paced and engaging from start to finish. I also loved that it’s a stand alone story because so often spy novels for this age go on over several books. As an adult I was able to guess several of the twists, though a few still surprised me, and I think a kid would be blown away by the direction the plot takes. My only complaint is that there was a lot of focus on lying - and emphasis on being a good lier. While that is realistic (and a little easier to excuse in a spy novel) I wish it wasn’t as prominent. On the whole this was really enjoyable, I think my older kids will love it, and I recommend for fans for City Spies and 39 Clues.
