Atmospheric but honestly just found it a bit boring. Lucy is pathetic and Hetty pitiable. By the time the big reveal came I just didn’t care that much anymore. That said, I listened to this in audiobook format, which I tend to find harder to engage with than traditional reading, and it was nice to see lesbian characters get their happily ever after.
You have to really love a story about museum collections for this book to hold your attention. A little over half way into it, it got very interesting and the end culminated with proper suspense. The first part of the story could have been gone over briefly leaving more room to hash out the drama that come in the second half.
Ohthankgawd thatsfinallyover!!! Blah!! Awful. Terrible. Annoying. Confusing. Boring.
A purple prose cowpat, attempting to imitate Sarah Waters.
Don’t care who ends up being behind the “mystery” (it’s probably the bitchy niece of the cook because every appearance points out she’s Bad). Boooooooring!

Accompanying a natural history museum evacuating part of its collection in anticipation of the Blitz, our protagonist moves to Lockwood manor and meets its tyrannical head and beautiful, fragile heir. It's an interesting combination of elements - decrepit manor filled with taxidermy and repressed lesbians and potential hauntings - but clumsily handled, a debut effort which is slow-moving in parts and has an over-explained, heavy-handed ending.

A lesbian historical novel very much in conversation with the Gothic canon, set in a spooky mansion filled with taxidermy, shadows, and talk of ghosts.

It was benign, better in the beginning but then had chunks of telling as time passed.
