Thought-provoking and insightful. I listened to the audio but I think to get the full effect and attention, a paper book would be best.

This book is an essential read for anyone curious about the impact of our fast-paced, social media-saturated, and highly developed modern lifestyle on human cognition and behavior. The first half of the book is particularly engaging, offering a wealth of practical tips and strategies for personal growth, parenting, and everyday routines. It’s both insightful and inspiring.
The second half shifts focus to broader ideological themes, presenting what might feel like a manifesto advocating for systemic changes. While some may find this approach a bit assertive, the author's perspective is both thought-provoking and timely. Johann rightly highlights the urgent need for global transformation, even if focus is just one foundational aspect of the broader challenge.

3.5 ⭐️. This book started out SO strong. However, towards the end his evidence and the connections to his main argument are more tenuous. I am a sympathetic audience and already try to do much of what he recommends (e.g., eat whole foods, give my sons unstructured playtime, especially outside). However, I think this could be (unnecessarily) alienating to a wider audience.

Not as detailed as The Chaos Machine but also covers a broader spectrum of why we may have trouble with focus in our current environment instead of only social media. Less harsh/more optimistic than The Chaos Machine as well. Found some of it a bit TOO Pollyanna/wish washy at times and didn’t love how the adhd chapter was laid out, but gave me a lot to think about, and REINFORCED one of my themes for the year and how much I need to set new boundaries on certain apps and behaviors

SONUNDA bitti

At times I struggle with texts like these because it feels like to make the changes to focus better, the world has to change so profoundly that it’s impossible. However, the book was meticulously researched and acknowledged the chapters with controversy and incomplete data. I was most stuck by chapter 14–on the way school has changed.  While the book wasn’t perfect it didn’t make me feel like all hope was lost. It gave a roadmap to what we might be feeling in loss of focus, some fascinating reasons (and horrifying ones too) but laid out ways that we can change course.  In this tense political climate, it also made me think about radicalization, rage bait and ways that the algorithm keeps us hopeless.  Reading it can bring awareness and change—a recommended read!
