dark mysterious slow-paced

In October of 1993, seventeen-year-old Amy is babysitting the two children of single mother, Eleanor. The young boy, Ben, is enamored with her and his older sister, Mira, is your typical uninterested teenager. Amy enjoys her babysitting job but she often suffers from panic attacks due to her anxiety. Despite her anxiety, Amy is a major horror movie buff. The evening takes a turn when odd things start happening - unexpected visitors and mysterious phone calls. Are the scary movies clouding her judgement or is there really a killer on the loose? The dead body in the kitchen is quite real - but how did it get there?

As a horror movie fan myself, I absolutely loved all the references in this book. The story goes back and forth between events of the night which was a little confusing but worked to keep you guessing as to what was going to happen. For a short story, surprisingly it did seem to drag a bit. The ending was predictable and cheesy but I didn't mind because the story is a nod to those cheesy horror movies of the 80's/90's. If you are into horror movies this a quick, entertaining read.

slow-paced

I really enjoyed this super nostalgic story set in the early ‘90’s. It centers on the babysitter Amy and the two kids she’s watching, Ben and Mira. It starts off with a bang and then works backwards from midnight to help us get to know the characters and how the night ended the way it did. I really enjoyed the two very different points of view the story was told in, both Amy and Ben told their versions of what happened that night. It was a fascinating look at how anxiety and family trauma mold us. The main character Amy was in love with slasher movies, and those same films helped get her deal with this trauma. A solid story that kept me invested with an end I never saw coming!

This book is neither a thriller nor a horror, in my opinion. I won't lie: this book could have been easily trimmed to 100 pages. The plot of Midnight on Beacon Street also differed greatly from what I had anticipated, which is regrettably not a positive thing in this instance.

Creepy and tense.
Like the perfect blend of all the best slasher movies. Told in bits of time, you’re left guessing until the end.
So much fun and just the right amount of scary

I should NOT have read this book when it was dark outside and I was home alone.

The premise was really interesting, but the execution wasn't my favorite. The characters felt a little one note - like they got stuck in the rut of their most basic traits. I enjoyed the different perspectives, but the time jumps got to be a little confusing and took some of the punch out of the conversations that were happening.
I also thought that the twist was a little shallow. It needed some more fleshing out to make it work well. In my opinion, the decoy intruder with the dad should have been the main focus.

Also, I wish it was scarier??
