I love this group of teens with my whole heart

Mixed feelings on this one. I thought the concept for the book was marvellous - teenagers becoming guerrilla soldiers after Australia is invaded. What's not to like about that?
I also thought some of the place descriptions were very good. I really like John Marsden and think he is very good at what he does. Honestly, I think my main issues with the book came down to personal taste. The book was very plot-dominant, but for me, the character development was a little skimpy. I only sort of got to know the characters, other than Homer, Lee and Ellie. I figured out that Robyn was Christian and posh but mostly the characters remained very two-dimensional, and so I didn't find myself overly upset when one of them came to a bad fate. I like to read a book and reach the end wishing I could give the characters a call to see how they are going. I didn't feel that. They seemed a bit wooden.
Even the main character Ellie sort of seemed like a Bruce Willis-style character who happened to be a teenage girl. I liked that Marsden let the girls be heroes but it would be nice for him to show that you don't need to be a masculine girl to have strengths. I grew up on a farm myself so I get that she would know how to drive and have plenty of practical skills but I felt that at least some of the female characters could have brought more to the table. Probably difficult for a male writer to do, but I know that Marsden has the skill to do it.
There was also much about the characters in the book that seemed implausible to me. Why were they not fretting about their families and friends more? Also, I found it hard to believe that all the teens would attempt the high-risk heroics that they did. I think at least some of them should have elected to hide out in hell and tend the gardens. Also, I question whether it would be possible for Australia to be invaded in the way it was, I just don't see how it would work, that they could manage to smuggle in such an onslaught of people that the army would not notice and retaliate. I mean, Australia is a pretty big country and it's population is pretty spread out. Maybe I am overthinkng it.
I think people who like really fast, dramatic plots would enjoy this book. I'll keep reading on, but I do hope that the characters win me over in the next book.
