Oh I love these books. It astounds me they're not more widely read - perhaps the Australian setting throws readers off at first? Hopefully with the recent hoopla about young adult books they'll get a wider audience, especially if fans of [b:The Hunger Games|2767052|The Hunger Games (Hunger Games, #1)|Suzanne Collins|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1209501026s/2767052.jpg|2792775] find these through recommendations. Anyway, the young female heroine kicks ass, both literally and figuratively. These books have something for everyone, and unlike many series, the writing only gets better.

crazy how this tiny little book took me 9 days to finish 😭 i think what caused it was the repetitiveness of a few narratives and a few storylines i really didn’t care for (the hermit’s backstory, for example, which i understand was inspired by a real story but i didn’t see how it fit with anything). also reading from my phone is PAINFUL and i get tired easily, but other than that this book was okay, watched the movie when i was a kid and loved the concept, i just think it was executed better than the original novel (which i feel bad not loving, both because i was very attached to the memory of the movie and because the author unfortunately passed away last year). i think towards the ending it picked up pacing a bit and i liked how it concluded, but pretty soon i got reminded that i felt annoyed about the choice of the author to tell the story using ellie’s diary, which felt unrealistically full of details and things you wouldn’t really include if you knew people will read it.
the ending also changed my mind about reading the sequels, which at first i was not interested in, but i would like to know how the story progresses especially since i didn’t expect a thing happening in the last chapter. i feel like it would be interesting if the other books are narrated by other characters, since we didn’t get too much from them

Unpopular opinion, it's honestly doesn't live up to the hype. It was good and the writing was amazing, but the plot just wasn't what I thought it would be. I think it just wasn't my jam. Wasn't a page turner, infact I only read it beacuse I had to for school.

I couldn't get into it. Most of it wasn't important and at 1 point I just skimmed it.
