This was a nostalgic re-read that reminded me why I enjoyed it as a kid—it's fast-paced with a strong hook. I liked that it focuses on the aftermath of the invasion, which keeps things moving, even if it does require you to overlook some logic gaps.
The writing sits on the simpler side of YA, and while it works for younger readers, it lacks the depth I’m now used to. Still, it’s easy to see why this book made such an impact, even if it didn’t hit quite as hard this time around.
Out on a camping trip in an idyllic little spot that you must have some determination (and stamina) to find, during their summer break, seven teenagers- Ellie, Homer, Corrie, Kevin, Fiona, Lee and Robyn- have the time of their lives in a place that is, ironically called Hell. New friendships are made, and old ones are strengthened, a few romances are built and basically everything else you can expect in a teenage camping trip.
That is, until they go back. For they gradually uncover that their homes, and their country have been invaded; that's it's no longer theirs, and their families have been taken by a foreign power and now, they're all alone.
Tomorrow when the war began is the first in a series of 6 called the tomorrow series. This first book, the best in the series that I've read so far, highlights how these teenagers change from happy go lucky, carefree and sheltered (well, relatively) to those who are just the opposite, all to take back what is rightfully theirs.
I truly loved this book, that has a rather ordinary beginning, but blossoms into something else altogether when you read on. It, true to the blurb, makes you ask yourself the biggest questions you will ever have to answer- would you fight? Would you have the courage to stand up and be a hero, when you can feel the cold chill of Death creeping down your back? Or would you keep yourself safe, and wait till the danger passes?- and tells you the very brutal, very honest tale of young people who have!
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read, something action packed, realistic and adrenaline filled that will leave you with a whole lot of deep thinking to do!

Nicely written, well done on getting me attached to the characters. It's not one of my favourite books, but I can't say anything bad about either. An easy read-through, but nothing I'll think about for weeks after I've read it.
