This is the story of the SB Pulaski, aka The Titanic of the South, and its sinking in 1838. Located 180 years after its sinking,100’ below the surface 35 miles off the coast of North Carolina.
Ms. Callahan chose to tell the store with a dual timelines. The current timeline is told via Everly who has grown up with stories of the Pulaski her entire life and the 1838 timeline is told by Augusta and Lilly. Augusta’s story is based on Rebecca Lamar’s telling of the sinking and days at sea. Her account can be read via JSTOR https://www.jstor.org/stable/40575609?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents .
Everly is researching the stories of Augusta and Lilly and wants to know what happened to them after the Pulaski sunk. She is also researching the artifacts that were salvaged. Ms. Callahan does a great job of making you feel as if you are a part of the story and you become invested in their outcomes.
I had never heard of the SB Pulaski before hearing about this book. I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it.
Although this is a book of fiction this story has factual information. You can visit the the links below to read about the recovery of the Pulaski and some the items located.

This book was fantastic! I had never heard about the Steamship Pulaski sinking before I heard the author talk about this book in an interview. She did a wonderful job bringing history to life while also telling the story of a present-day woman who is trying to live after her own tragedy. I spent time researching after I finished the book, which shows that it really captured me. The author's note at the end is very good as well.

I found the dual timeline interesting until the halfway point where I started to skim the present day story. I kinda of feel like Henry didn't have enough story to go off of. The shipwreck was interesting but it fell flat. It dragged on and on until I was only skimming at the end. I think if she built more about the characters at the beginning and waited for the ship to explode more into the halfway point of the story, it would have been paced better. This was a 3 star for me.
