Almost gave up on this halfway through. It started out well, got *extremely* boring and diffuse, then ended up back together neatly enough, though it took Dickens flat changing the personalities of some of the characters to do so. If I wasn't committed to reading everything of Dickens's, I would not have finished this one.

Woohoo! This novel was a lot more fun than I expected (Dickens rarely disappoints). Although not the main point either of the novel or my interest, I was entertained by the American chapters. We have changed very little since Dickens wrote this: the characterizations and issues could easily have been a satire on current politics. Five big stars!

I know Dickens thought this was his best work, but I'm not so sure. Don't get me wrong, it was a good read, but I don't know if it matches any of his well-known and loved classics (David Copperfield, Great Expectations, or Oliver Twist, for example). The novel was thematically strong, examining facets of trust and greed. Plus, this novel features characters who temporarily emigrated to the United States, so the reader gets a sense of Dickens' impression of the US in his time. Worth reading and entertaining.
